Welcome to Korea

Go to restaurant, Japanese earthquake on TV.  Parading piles of blankets around, dead baby leg hanging out.  Another pile of blankets, a dead baby arm.

Girlfriend translates what the koreans next to us are saying about the japanese deserving it, how the cars look good on the buildings.  Die a little inside.

Depressed for 2 days.

  2. what's happened to the cynical couldn't care less Sam we all love? They are just a backward parochial nation from about 100 years ago it seems to me.

  3. :( It was horrendous, Sam. A friend who lives in Chiba (southeast of Tokyo) said that her local authorities warned people of an 7-magnitude aftershock within a week. Hope the aftershock isn't as bad as the one in Christchurch last month!

I'm pretty depressed about it. My partner's meant to go back to Tokyo (from Korea) next week. Been trying to talk him out of it...

  4. How do they know there's going to be an aftershock? I thought they couldn't predict earthquakes?

  5. They predict earthquake by collect datas to determine geological patterns and probabilities. Usually after a major earthquake, there'll be aftershocks because the tectonic plates adjust themselves into a new position. The bigger the primary earthquake, the bigger the aftershocks. But they can't predict the time of the quakes and aftershocks narrowly enough to be helpful. It could be 7 days, 3 months, or 4 which in geological time, it's a dot.

  6. So they get to live in fear of more earthquakes for six months. Nice.

  7. The aftershock of magnitude 6 did happen last night, felt most in Shisuoka. They felt it quite strongly in Tokyo too. No tsunami this time. More to come!

The Japanese have been aware of dealing with this uncertainty for centuries. If they have no prediction at all, they won't be able to work out any strategy and more lives would be lost. It's probably the best they can do in a fluid situation...
